Wildflowers

All the pictures of wildflowers and meadows on our website were taken at Great Glen Lodges.

When we took over the business, we decided to return to the property some of the character it would have had in a wilder state.

We wanted guests to feel they were in little cabins settled amongst mountain meadows.

So we sowed native Scottish wildflower seeds all around the property to supplement the wild plants that were already here. We stopped mowing most of the land and have kept just a few paths and areas short.

We’d ask guests to treat our meadows as nature reserves and not to trample them or let pets run astray.

Some of the plant varieties you’ll see in various seasons include

  • heath spotted orchid (dactylorhiza maculata)
  • heather / ling (calluna vulgaris)
  • tufted vetch (vicia cracca)
  • common sorrel (rumex acetosa)
  • devil’s-bit scabious (succisa pratensis)
  • selfheal (prunella vulgaris)
  • yellow rattle (rhinanthus minor)
  • autumn hawkbit (scorzoneroides autumnalis)
  • ox-eye daisy (leucanthemum vulgare)
  • lady’s bedstraw (galium verum)
  • crested dog’s tail (cynosurus cristatus)
  • common knapweed (centaurea nigra)
  • common bent (agrostis capillaris)
  • meadow foxtail (alopecurius pratensis).
